CultureID – Internet of Things, Robotics, Big Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence in Culture

The project seeks to highlight and integrate new technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Robotics, Big Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence in Culture. Our team will integrate RFID technology in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, shaping the necessary conditions for interaction with the exhibits and will develop a series of innovative products that utilize the technology.
The goals of the project are:
Continuous monitoring of the exhibits and digital recording of the operations on them. Thanks to RFID technology, each exhibit will be associated with a unique RFID label. The new relationship of the exhibit with the label is stored in the new database developed within the project. The location of the exhibit is constantly monitored through a dense network of RFID readers. Thus, when an exhibit is moved, e.g. to perform a restoration action, the movement is recorded by the system. In addition, the staff who moved the exhibit is recorded. The staff is responsible to record the action documenting this movement and the action is stored in the Museum’s new database. Thus, this operation will follow the exhibit, uniquely completing its digital identity. Similarly, the security of the exhibits is improved, as any movement of the exhibit by unauthorized personnel is recorded. In addition, thanks to RFID technology, the project team will develop innovative methods for tracking the flow of visitors. Thus, the interest of the visitors per exhibit can be quantified. Traffic statistics, traffic flow, etc. will be created.
Design and construction of an original portable device, capable of interacting with the exhibits. A portable device with a touch screen will be built, which will incorporate RFID tag reading technology. The project team will develop original algorithms for locating RFID tags (and therefore exhibits) from the mobile device. Thus, the visitor will be able to enjoy a digital tour, simply by “reading” the exhibit in front of him. In addition, “games” will be developed for younger visitors who will take advantage of the “discovery” features offered by the mobile device (read more in guest games).
Design and construction of the first Greek social robot with integrated RFID technology for interaction with the natural world. The project team will design and build the first Greek social robot with integrated RFID technology for interaction with the physical world. The robot aims to stimulate the interest of younger visitors through actions (games) that will be developed (read more in games for visitors). The robot will be able to map and locate itself (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping – SLAM), will be able to move in space, recognize obstacles, voice-interact with humans (ASR and TTS), while artificial intelligence algorithms will be developed, suitable for integration of games with younger visitors. Finally, the robot will integrate original technology for recognizing the position of labels (and therefore exhibits) and autonomously navigate towards them.
Games for the visitors: The robot and the mobile device will be used as the vehicles to stimulate the interest of younger groups of visitors for the cultural content of the Museum. Thanks to RFID technology, the two original devices can interact with the exhibits. This will empower several games, like “lost treasure games” inside the Museum. The puzzles’ solutions will require the use of the mobile device or interaction with the robot, while through them, the visitors will learn important information about the exhibits of the Museum.
