SITIES aspires is to build an intelligent low cost assistant, which will be available to elderly people and will provide useful services in the form of smart applications, either on a stand-alone basis or on demand.

The smart assistant will receive and execute applications (in a way similar to smartphones), which will in turn be able to use cloud web services that will undertake computationally demanding processes (such as image or audio processing). The system will be complemented by appropriate programming and computing infrastructure to allow for easy creation and management of new applications and network services by companies and independent developers. The smart assistant will be handled locally by elderly users and their immediate relatives, while the overall platform will be managed by GNOMON, which will also be responsible for marketing the product. The technical implementation of the software will be mainly undertaken by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which has proven experience in manufacturing similar tools. The basic innovation of the proposal is that it will be specifically targeted at the elderly, with inherent support for the Greek language, and will be available at low cost.

The main technical objective of the project is to develop a multidimensional and distributed system that will provide the appropriate programming tools and software and hardware interfaces focusing on the development of innovative applications that will help and improve the living conditions of the elderly. The system is divided into two distinct entities: the online platform and the smart device (personal assistant). The platform will be deployed in cloud computing and will offer a set of services to private and public service providers as well as to application developers. Interaction with the platform will be through appropriate network interfaces, tailored to the role of each user. On a second level, the platform will support the execution of web services that have been developed either by project partners or external developers and will implement processes that require more computational power. As for the smart device, a pre-installed smart agent (core agent) will play a central role in communicating with sensors, device hardware, and the online platform. Application developers will be provided with an SDK to allow them to call functions of the hardware as well as the platform and its services. Apps can be installed and run dynamically on the device, while a personalized version of the device (avatar) will be presented to the end user, giving a more elderly personality.

The development methodology will be spiral comprising two cycles, out of which two versions will emerge. In the first phase of each cycle, user requirements will be gathered, the specifications will be recorded and the system will be designed. In the 2nd phase the system will be implemented, while the 3rd components will be integrated, including the interconnection of various parts of the platform as well as the smart device. In the 4th and final phase of each cycle, the qualitative assessment of the prototype will be done through user tests and data analysis that will result from its use. The second round will repeat the above steps taking into account the assessment of the 1st round. The results of the SYTIES project are expected to have an impact on the following axes:
(a) social: informing society, actors, the elderly, improving the quality of life of older people.
(b) Financial: cost reduction of older care structures, health services / applications development, new jobs and
(c) scientific: publications, dissemination of research results through a platform.
